"Just in case you're still interested in the answer to the equation on the board, it should be 5, professor." Ceres said, trying hard to keep any hint of irony or irritation out of her voice. It wouldn't do to upset a teacher, as the example of that Ravenclaw boy had shown. And Ceres had decided she wanted to become a prefect, if possible. Getting on with teachers was important for that. And anyway, none of her bad mood was the teachers' fault. It was the Battle's fault and her mother's fault. Ceres tried hard to keep her mind on the lesson and away from her family.

"Correct Miss Lestrange. 10 points to Slytherin." She smiles at the young girl... Who stared blankly ahead. Keri's eyebrows furrowed in concern. She would need to make sure the student was alright.
"In addition to Miss Lestrange's answer, does anybody have an idea on what the 5 life path entails?"
The professor raised an eyebrow and looked at the students. Today she had had many students actually pay attention in class. It was bizarre to say the least. She waited for a student to raise their hand.

Again, Ceres raised her hand. This was much better than brooding about the letter her mother had sent her this morning. She would have to deal with it sooner or later, but for now, Arithmancy was what should occupy her mind. Her goal was to be in the top five of her year, and for the last years, she had always managed. Ceres wasn't sure if her life path could be explained by a number formed from the date of her birth, but she was willing to learn about it and make an informed decision later on. Divination, on the other hand, she didn't need to experience to know it was rubbish.
The girl had always been bright, but didn't speak much in class. Today had definitely been a good one for the professor. So many students were actually getting something from the lesson. And some student had gotten it quite well.
The woman thought about what her next question would be. She also waited for Miss Smith to respond to her earlier statement.
"Does anyone have any questions?" She looked around the classroom at the bored students it housed. Slytherins and Gryffindors alike. Ravenclaws and Hufflepuff too. It was a bit strange, seeing them all bunched together like that. The headmaster must've changed the schedule or something. Keri didn't really care.

"A person with a life path of 5 seeks freedom more than anything else. He is an adventurous person and often restless, always ready to go, looking for changes and variety in life. He has a free spirit and needs adventure in his life, if he doesn't have it, he tends to be very dramatic. Meeting new people, trying new things, and living for the present are things he loves. He is very curious and searches for answers to life's questions. He loves taking risks and hates routine and repetition. He has a hard time settling down and lives in fear of being trapped or smothered in a relationship. He is also concerned with the freedom and welfare of others. Usually, he is very compassionate, but his focus on adventure and his curiosity can distract him from seeing how others around him feel. The constant search for adventure can cause life to lose direction, and this can make him impatient and discontent. He can be very persuasive and is probably good at motivating people. He is also versatile and wants to be his own boss."
Ceres paused. "I do have a question, professor. I am a four, but anyone who knows me at all would say that the four doesn't describe me at all. My mother told me I should have been born on the 18th of August, but the Healers decided to end her pregnancy sooner, since they feared for her health. Had I been born six days after my birthday, I would have been a one, that describes me a lot better. So could it be that if a pregnancy didn't end naturally, the life path number of that child is wrong?"

"Ah. Well, Miss Lestrange, sometimes it take a bit longer for one to grow into the person they're destined to be. While they may behave and think a certain way for now. When they get older they may slowly become more like their life path number. Seeing as people change so frequently, you could have some major event that changes your perspective on things." She said, pausing in odd places. She didn't normally get questions like this. While it make her happy, it also made her think.
"The life path that you receive is actually correct. However, it may take time for it to seem that way."
"By the way, that's correct Miss Lestrange, 10 points to Slytherin. Are there any other questions I need to answer before continuing?" She directed the question the rest of the class.

Ceres leaned back in her seat, not quite satisfied with her professor's answer. Her, a four. No way. And what else should happen in her life that could be more incisive than growing up with just her mother, then gaining a father, uncle and aunt, only to lose them completely after mere two years? She blinked rapidly to keep the tears from falling. Crying in class at her age was completely embarassing. 'Concentrate on what the professor is saying,' she ordered herself, 'just concentrate for that, and for Merlin's sake, don't think about that owl from mother this morning'. Trouble was, the professor wasn't saying anything.

Keri saw the way that Ceres was skeptical, and then saw the girl blink quickly. "The number four life path, describes a person that likes to keep to themselves, and is a normal person who stays within the norm as much as they can. They are amazing students to have and often are very smart. They aren't usually very sociable, and prefers calm over chaos."
She looked back at the girl.
"Now, class, I'm going to describe a number and I'm going to ask one of you to tell me which one it is."
She thought for a moment before smiling "This life path is full of trials. Once you're done with one, another pops up right after. They don't see a difference between the person next door and the person across the world. As they are a true humanitarian."
She wondered absent-mindedly whether or not anyone would answer. But she didn't want to see anyone in her class crying.

Ceres pondered her professor's question. She had an idea, but really wasnt sure ifin it was correct. Losing housepoints was something she wanted to avoid if possible. Hm...it was pretty tricky. Even though, Ceres made a decision and raised her hand. It she was wrong...well, there were plenty of others sitting in the room with her who weren't making any suggestions, among them several Slytherins, so she hoped no one would blae her for losing points. Strange to see so few participating, even if Ceres wasn't certain if Arithmancy could really give a direction to life, it was an interesting subject to study.
Her eyes flashed to the young girl with her hand reaching for the air. She was surprised that the girl who seemed to be pulling herself together, was now raising her hand waiting to be called on.
Keri had always loved arithmancy. Ever since she was a little girl. She felt it was an accurate way to describe oneself. She was just never able to voice her love until today. Students were actually paying attention. You could hear quills scribbling on parchment. She felt a smile spread across her face before listening to the young student's answer.
