Vanessa Ariel Collins
Age: 15
Birthday: May 19th
Appearance
Her figure is slender from the waist up, as her hips are on the slightly larger than average size. She has a luminous face with a pale tone to it and light freckles. Plump, her lips have the strangest curl to them. Her eyes are a misty blue, complimenting her fine wheat-blonde hair. Muggle fashion is of interest to her, though she's not the type to keep up with the latest trends. The choice of clothing for wizards is horrid, in her opinion, and she likes to dress as a muggle would whenever possible.
Character History
Vanessa was born at St. Mungos, to Gabriel and Mallory Collins. The very first thing the healer commented on after she’d graced the world was the maple leaf shaped birthmark in the middle of her back, which she complained about as she got older – it was hard to go out in a two-piece swimsuit without someone staring. In her younger years, she spent her time playing with local muggle children and her older brother, Connor David Collins. When Connor left for school, she was very distressed, having held that particular attachment to her brother that usually drifts away once one enters the preteen years.
The very first time she did accidental magic that she remembered (her mum said she did some when she was a toddler) was when an older girl was bossing her and all the other younger girls around at school one day. Somehow, the older girl ended up stuck to the brick wall of the school, vomiting, and her hair turning ugly shades of green and yellow. No one would have known it had been Vanessa who did this had it not been for that fact that she’d pushed out towards the girl before she went flying backwards into the wall. The other students started to call her a ‘freak’ and it became so bad that her mum and dad withdrew her from school, choosing to take care of what she needed to know to go to Hogwarts themselves.
Due to her experience with muggle children shunning her after one bout of accidental magic, she feels a bit uneasy towards muggles, except for those that are her family. She always felt the need to do well when it comes to her schoolwork, taking it as a personal failure on her part if she does not earn a high grade. The school counselor suggested that this might stem from her wanting to do well not only for herself, but also her dad, who did not have the chance to go through all seven years as she does. Her friends call her cheerful, if not a bit too rowdy about Quidditch. It is a sport that Vanessa follows obsessively – the Holyhead Harpies are her favorite team – and she’s been known to talk for over an hour about the sport to anyone who will listen. She’s a fan of flying herself, preferring it to any other form of travel; though muggle transportation is kind of fun as well, in her opinion.
Most would describe Vanessa as "the sweetest girl you will ever meet", though underneath her sweet appearance is a more complex nature. She is very unsure of herself and self-conscious about her weight, to the point where she carefully weighs her food before eating, hinting at the possibility that she might have an eating disorder, though it's doubtful that anyone has noticed. She's witty and she definitely likes people to hear her opinion. She likes to stir things up, test people and manipulate things around her to see what would happen, but she doesn't mean to do bad. She doesn't really think about the consequences of her actions a lot of the time though.
Family History
Gabriel Darren Collins was born into an all muggle family in Hampshire, and thus was one of many muggle-born students to be surprised with the reveal that he was a wizard. He went to Hogwarts at the age of 11, as all Hogwarts students do, was sorted into Hufflepuff and did not attend the years after. His second year was the year that one of Voldemort’s most trusted death eaters overtook the school, killing Headmistress McGongall. He and his family – mum, dad, gran, sister, and brother – moved to New Zealand to escape the madness that occurred in Britain. After the defeat of Voldemort by his son and the Omega, he joined the British wizarding world once again, his family all moving back now that it seemed safe. His magical education cut short, he felt that his life of wizardry was doomed, until Mallory Anne Lenox burst into his life one dismal evening at the Leaky Cauldron.
Mallory Anne Lenox came from a half-blood family; both her parents were half-bloods and had been in Slytherin. That made it kind of the family house, they always told her, so it was a delight that she’d been sorted into Slytherin as well. At Hogwarts, she excelled in Ancient Runes and Charms, and even had a knack, her Professor said, for Herbology. Relatively oblivious to the dilemmas of others due to the wizarding war, she only had one goal in sight while in school and that was to become an Obliviator. Her father worked for the Department of Magical Law Enforcement and her mother wrote articles for the Daily Prophet, so there was no big fuss about her chosen career. She became an Obliviator as she wanted and was stopping by the Leaky Cauldron for a drink before heading home when she met Gabriel.
The two did not click instantly like those fated-to-be couples in muggle movies. They started off not even liking one another very much, she found his sulking about not having a proper education disagreeable and he thought she was nothing but a stuck up, first-class snob. It was only after a few exchanges of harsh words and random encounters throughout magical London that they decided to begin a friendship of sorts. The friendship led to them living in a two bedroom flat together, the only rule being that they warn one another when they intended to bring a significant other by. During the time that they lived together, Mallory helped him practice magic and Gabriel started working at Magical Menagerie, feeling that his life was starting to look up a bit more from the dreary mess it had been.
It was after they’d had a quarrel over Mallory’s most recent boyfriend and Gabriel had stormed out in the pouring rain that Mallory realized she was in love with her flat mate for the first time. She waited all evening for him to return, fixing him a hot cup of tea when he returned and nursing him back to good health from a bad cold in the following days. Mallory did not bring over more boyfriends and moped whenever Gabriel stopped by her work to let her know he was bringing a girl back. She didn’t want to confess to him first. It had been her father that confessed to her mother first and she had always expected her romantic relationships to start the same. But she broke down one night when he came stumbling through the door, a random brunette hanging from his arm. She shouted at him before declaring that she loved him and rushing into her room, slamming the door.
Even in his drunken stupor, Gabriel was able to gather his senses enough that he understood Mallory was not joking. So he sent away the random girl, sobered up over night, and sat down outside Mallory’s room the whole night so that they could talk when she came out. They did, though Mallory was tight-lipped at first, and they decided to try out a relationship. It worked out, the two of them together. After a year and a half of dating, they married, and started a family a year later. They moved from their flat to a nice home in Godric’s Hollow following the birth of their first child.
The two have been happy since.
