Trevor was quite startled when the owl tapped on the window besides his bed. His family, all muggles, didn't use owls, and would celebrate his birthday when he went home for the holiday. So he really wasn't expecting anything. Curiously, he opened the window and let the bird enter. He carefully took the letter and package from the owl, which sat on his pillow, looking at him expectantly. Trevor stared back.
"Thank you?" he tried. The bird continued to look. Trevor began to feel a bit uncomfortable. His brother was a big fan of Alfred Hitchcock, and Trevor had joined his brother often enough for a serious movie session to be freaked out by big birds staring at him with beady eyes.
"Shoo!" He made a sweeping motion with his hands. The owl hopped over, hooting indignantly. Trevor pointed to the window. "Look, it's open."  The owl didn't move.
"What do you want?" he exclaimed, exasperated, just as one of his dorm mates entered the room.
"It wants a treat for bringing the post." the boy said, sounding as if that was the most obvious thing in the world. Which it kind of was, if you thought about it, Trevor supposed. "Thanks." he answered.
"No problem." The boy left again after retrieving a book from his trunk.
Trevor searched through his bedside table, finally coming up with some biscuits. He handed some to the owl, who happily ate them.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be rude, I just didn't understand you." he apologized to the bird. It hooted in a friendly way, still sitting on the pillow.
Trevor turned to the letter, his heart beating more quickly when he realized who it was from. After reading it, he wondered why Connor hadn't met up with him to give him the gift. Not that he would have expected to receive one, he was surprised that Connor even knew his birthday. He opened the package. "Wow, this is beautiful," he whispered, slipping the necklace over his head. The stone immediately shimmered a darker blue. "I guess dark blue means happy and surprised." Trevor muttered.
He reached for a quill and parchment.

Hey Connor,

this is absolutely gorgeous, I truly love it (no, I'm definitely NOT lying). Thank you so much! I hope you know you didn't have to get me a gift. But I'm really glad you did.
Please let me treat you to a butterbeer or something in Hogsmeade tomorrow.

He tied the letter to the owl's leg, gave the bird another biscuit, then carried it to the window and watched it fly off.
